Addressing climate change has often narrowly focused on public policy related to greenhouse gas emission controls and other issues seemingly out of most peoples’ hands.
In this workshop we will highlight specific roles for designers, planners, and project owners -- those who help shape the economy’s underpinnings -- in improving how buildings, infrastructure, and business processes affect and are being affected by changing climate.
Our investments in the built environment and its energy supplies are shaping future climate conditions. From warming oceans and weather extremes, to urban floods and regional droughts, threats related to climate change pose serious impacts to communities and businesses.
In the course, participants will learn practical strategies that work, and will explore how to more broadly apply them. Discussions will focus on:

Wendi Goldsmith is a seasoned entrepreneur and scientist recognized for leadership in sustainable development and climate resilient design. She helps business and government to identify and operationalize emerging technology related to the built environment and industrial ecology. Her experience spans consulting, R&D, and numerous Board roles for NGO and business. She founded and for twenty-three years was the CEO of the Bioengineering Group.
Natasha Lamb is the Director of Equity Research and Shareholder Engagement and a Portfolio Manager at Arjuna Capital, the sustainable wealth management platform of Baldwin Brothers Inc. Specializing in the integration of sustainability and shareholder value creation, Natasha integrates Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) factors into fundamental investment decisions, while engaging corporate leadership to improve performance through shareholder proposals, dialog, and public policy advocacy.
Attorney Barbara Kessner Landau specializes in environmental, land use, and construction law. She has written articles and presented numerous seminars on climate change, green building and sustainable design; brownfields redevelopment and hazardous waste site cleanup.Her expertise includes stormwater management, wetlands compliance, brownfields cleanup and redevelopment, and solid and hazardous waste management.
Cynthia McHale, Director of Ceres Insurance Program, is working to promote the insurance industry’s understanding and leadership on climate risks and opportunities. She brings over twenty years of sector expertise working with many of the leading North American and European insurers, re-insurers and industry brokers.
For 35 years before becoming President of the Natural Hazard Mitigation Association, Ed Thomas worked for the Department of Homeland Security-Federal Emergency Management Agency in Disaster Mitigation, Preparedness and Response. He has authored dozens of publications on disaster related issues and participates in developing National disaster-related and floodplain management policies.
